Defense witness Dr. Seymour Halleck testified that Susan Smith was so suicidal on the night she killed her children that she may not have known they were in the car when she let it roll into a lake.
''It is possible that she blocked out the awareness that they were in the car,'' Halleck, a University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill forensic psychiatrist and expert on psychiatry and the law, told jurors on July 21, 1995.
